PDX POPness

"The afternoon session indoors was darker and slower, beginning with the twangy octave-leaping vocals and noisy electronics of Dragging Ox Through Water and ending with the sighing, spluttering synths, flute fragments and sauntering trumpet of Gulls.

Evolutionary Jazz Band member Jesse Johnson's Gulls formed the perfect end to the set, taking Repp's sultry reflections and the bubbling, primal keys and samples of Ox and blending them into an airy update of both trip-hop and jazz, like "Sketches of Spain"-era Miles Davis meeting the otherworldly pulses of Boards of Canada.
Nearby, a middle-age woman in a black belly shirt and gray short pants swayed a strange calisthenics routine to the sampled timbales, stair-stepping in time to the trumpeted ellipses giving way to yet another of the festival's procession of disparate sets, which continued Saturday night and Sunday." -(oregonlive.com)

HA THAT LAST LITTLE BIT IS AWSOME!! IT WAS A BEATIFULL SUNNY DAY, AND I WAS LUCKY TO BE JOINED BY DAVID FIMBRES ON FLUTE AND ELECTRONICS! IT WAS VERY NICE MOVING THE SUBS FOR THE YOUTH OF OUR TOWN. THNX PDX POP.....

ON the P tip ....
The new record has recieved some really nice reviews most recently from dutch based publication/podcast Vital Weekly. Heres what hey had to say.....
" Jesse Munro Johnson is Gulls, and he is from that beautiful city, Portland, who is said to be a multi-instrumentalist, which, if he played all of this here, is very much true. We hear a trumpet, some bass, drums, xylophone and a stack of electronics. He improvises his music, but not as an end: as a means to create something else. All the work he does, is part of the larger work: the finished composition, the collage of sound that are the eight tracks (although some pieces cover more tracks) on this CD. The drums come largely out of a box, but on top he waves his trumpet, guitar, samples, field recordings and sticks the various pieces of tape together in his highly vivid piece of music. Ranging from hip hop (but louder and dirtier) to musique concrete, from sound collage to ambient glitch, Gulls covers many territories, which do not really bite each other. You could have though it would, but it all makes great sense here. Gulls takes you out on a trip, a headtrip of space music.
Spacious trumpet sounds, static crackles and heavy pounding drums: it all passes easily, and does it in a great way. Big city music with sometimes a country feel."

**They also included "this is clever freedom pt 2" the second track from the record in there weekly podcast of new and experimental sounds from the globe. download it HERE!

5/3/07 @ towne lounge with Attack Formation

THIS IS CLEVER FREEDOM! Heres a snipet from my set....

It was a dark rainy night. Attack Formation from ausitn threw down a set of forward energy and pop deconstruction. Really rad dudes having a great time. I unveiled the gulls sound system for the first time. Fuck depending on some clubs shitty old PA. (thanks eric hold for the sub woofer!!!!!) (thanks scott for working the camera)
It was very liberating to here my own speakers moving in an unfamiliar room.

-** and for the record... We portlanders need to turn the tables. The state of venues is grim, For a town with so many musicians and bands and inspired people. we Need to DEMAND respect from venues!! ART is for the people and not for your liquor sales... There are to many clubs in this town treating musicians like shit! Lets be done with the bullshit. There have been to many occasions recently that i've experienced first hand and through word of mouth in which artists and musicians have been shut down, dissed, and disrespected by venues and club owners. We must remember why we are doing what we are doing. And if we are truley coming from a place of creative movement and passion. Then the power is ours. The clubs of this town need us much more than we need them. We keep them in buissines..!! Take to the streets, throw more house shows, make more records, and support places like the lovely and wonderfull VALENTINES!!!

XOXOXO out!
